On the Volga-Baltic canal, the boat stops in the village of Goritsy (Горицы in Cyrillic). It is a small village in the Kirillovsky district of the Vologda region. It is best known for its monastery dedicated to St. Cyril, 8 km away. Most excursions ignore the Monastery of the Resurrection, which is located on the Sheksna River, and this is a pity. The name of the village comes from "gora" which means "mountain", its surroundings being very abundant in massifs and passes: Maura, Nikitskaya, Gorodok, etc. The most beautiful is the Maura mountain, visible from the quay. Its appearance is particularly impressive in spring, when apple trees blossom along its slopes.
