Belozersk, on the south bank, far away. It is mentioned in texts as early as 862. At that time it was located on the other side of the lake, next to the village of Kisnema. The Varègues, a people of Normans, warriors and merchants, occupied this region from where they could manage the trade between the North Sea and the Black Sea. They gave the surrounding villages Finno-Ugric-sounding names. Floods forced Vladimir to move the town to the source of the river Sheksna. The present town is 10 km away from the original town, which was wiped out by the plague in the 14th century. Today it is a dynamic port specializing in timber and fish.
