Kirillov (7,400 inhabitants) is a city of precious heritage, with 28 historic buildings. It is the administrative centre of the Kirillovsky district in Vologda oblast, 129 km from Vologda. The town is built around its monastery, founded in the 14th century by the monk Kirill of Beloozero on the shores of lakes Siverskoye and Dolgoye. Ivan the Terrible had his own cell there, and surprisingly, the monastery also served as a political prison. And it was the Bolsheviks who, in 1924, closed it down and turned it into a museum! Since 1998, the monks have been back there and it is a very visited historical monument that can be reached by bus from Vologda
