While the town owes its development primarily to the construction of the power station and the timber industry, it has also been very dynamic in poultry farming, flax processing and the production of the famous Vologda butter. Numerous leisure centres and sanatoriums have been built on the banks of the river near the town. At km 596, two locks of different sizes are based near the town of Sheksna. The most important one dates only from 1992 and was built to relieve river traffic. The latter changes its inclination and you will climb 13 m, whereas the locks had allowed you to go down since you left Moscow.
