Before entering the channel. This city was founded in 1777 at the crossing of two rivers. Today it is an industrial town of 315,000 inhabitants. Some beautiful 19th century houses are still standing, but the town is best known for its museum dedicated to Vasily Verechtchaguin (1842-1904), one of the figures of Russian art. As a student in Paris, he was an official army painter and war correspondent. A great traveller, Verechtchaguine visited Cuba, Bulgaria, India and the Philippines. His brother Nicolai was the first to take advantage of the excellent quality of the local milk and to launch the production of the famous Vologda butter.
