The Vologda region is a land of quiet rivers, endless forests and bright lakes. Its riches attracted pioneers to the river banks as early as the 12th century, driving out the Finno-Ugric peoples who lived there. This is how Vologda was born, "clear water" or "white city" in an Uralic language. The city played a significant role in the history of Russia. Its strategic location at the crossroads of sea and land routes and its fertile land made it the scene of bloody struggles, but Vologda always rose again. It is now a peaceful city where one can walk for hours, either in its many landscaped green areas or along the Vologda River.
