The city is described as "the white city on seven hills with a necklace of green gardens" in Russian literature. It is the archetypal sleeping town of the Russian countryside and is used as such in literature and Slavic cinema. The wooded and marshy countryside in which the city sits, the most northerly of the circuit, is home to some species that are usually found only near the Arctic Circle, such as bears and elk. The forest, dense and deep, is surrounded by legends, such as that of Ivan Susanin, a hero of Kostroma who sacrificed himself by leading invaders astray.
