Founded in the 12th century at the same time as Kostroma, the town extends along the shores of Lake Galichskoye. This independent principality covered an immense territory, watered by three tributaries of the Volga. The town gradually grew and became one of the most populated in the region. In the 15th century, the Princes of Galich waged war against the great principality of Moscow, but after twenty years of fighting, the city was burned down and fell under the yoke of its rival. It became an important trading centre for leather and furs, famous for its fairs and markets held under its stone mall.
