Located 20 km from Rostov, this town is situated in a picturesque and hilly area. Its destiny changed when Catherine II crossed it on her way to Yaroslavl and noticed the village. Petrovskoye was first transformed into a district and, in 1797, became a town with a plan decided by the empress. The crowning achievement of this urban development project was the white stone cathedral and the public buildings built in the centre of the new town. As it was on the road to Moscow, the city became a commercial stage. In the mid-19th century, peasants turned merchants built rich stone houses.
