Located 50 km southwest of Fukuoka, Karatsu is a good stop to discover the Higashi-Matsuura-Hantō peninsula. It is an opportunity to discover its pottery, of Korean inspiration, which has become a great specialty of the region and one of the most famous in Japan. A fishing port with a magnificent seaside, the city invites to rest outside the period of the Karatsu Kunchi festival. Its castle, which dominates the city, and Nji-no-Matsubara, or Rainbow Pine Forest, are the main attractions. And for more than 400 years, in the autumn, Karatsu has been the scene of a festival celebrating the abundance of the harvest. The Karatsu Kunchi Festival is a gigantic parade that runs through the city for three days. The hikiyama, or floats, fill the streets to the delight of the spectators.
