It was on this island that the Portuguese ships arrived in 1549, six years after reaching Tanegashima Island. In 1550, St Francis Xavier landed on the island after being expelled from Kagoshima. In 1584, the Portuguese established a trading post there, followed by the Dutch in 1609, and the British in 1613. By 1618, this fine colony of adventurers was causing so much trouble that the Japanese intervened to restore order. In 1641 the shōgun intimated to the Dutch an order to fall back on Dejima. In the city, on August 18, the Jangara Bon dances are held.
