It is a spa town with an old-fashioned atmosphere, but not without charm. One feels some European inspirations, as it is true that in the 19th century Unzen was one of the favorite destinations of Europeans living in southern Japan, and even Westerners living in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The jigokus are nicknamed the underworld. Burning geysers, solfataras and other boiling pots were unfortunately a way to get rid of recalcitrant Christians. Its notoriety was brought back to the forefront with the release of Martin Scorsese's film Silence . The Issaikyō waterfall can also be seen on the way to Obama.
