Capital of the eponymous county, Akita has more than 335,000 inhabitants. It has become an industrial city thanks to its gas and oil deposits, which are rather rare in Japan, and its traditional activities such as silk manufacturing and woodworking. It is not strictly speaking a tourist city, but has become - thanks to the Shinkansen railway link, of which it is the terminus - an easy destination, especially for tourists who want to visit the lake region (Tazawa-ko, Towada-ko, the samurai town of Kakunodate and finally the Oga-Hantô peninsula) Located on the right bank of the Omono River, the city is famous for its famous Lantern Festival (kantō) in August
