From Achtarak, the main road runs along the Kazakh canyon until the river drowns in a reservoir surrounded by mountains, 50 kilometres north of the capital. This is the artificial lake of Abaran, whose grassy and wooded shores provide a pleasant camping area. At an altitude of 1,500 metres, on a plateau at the foot of the Arakadz, Abaran is a large agricultural town of a few thousand inhabitants (about 7,000), with little infrastructure, halfway between Gyumri and Yerevan
