This locality, situated 5 km from Stilo, has one of the most beautiful testimonies of the Byzantine civilization in Calabria: the Greek Orthodox monastery of St. John Theresti, whose church, the only survivor of the 11th-century religious complex, presents a mixture of Byzantine and Arab-Norman styles. The monastery is dedicated to St John Theresti (Palermo c. 995-Stilo 1054), a hermit and miracle worker who arrived in the area after fleeing the Arab invasions in Sicily. From Bivongi, the spectacular Marmarico waterfalls, the highest in the southern Apennines (114 m), can be reached along a pleasant path for a few kilometres along the Stilaro valley.
