Founded by the Messapians, occupied by the Romans under the name ofUxentum, Ugento is a large town that has known all the foreign dominations of the Salento. Today it is home to a large number of ancient and more recent remains. Piazza Vincenzo, the main square, is bordered by the episcopal palace and the cathedral with its neoclassical façade from the 18th century. It still has the original crypt carved into the rock. All around, the historic centre with its characteristic stone houses unfolds. Don't miss the castle and the archaeological museum. The beaches around Torre San Giovanni have made the town a famous seaside resort.
