This ancient Achaean city had charmed Pythagoras (580-495 BC) and Theocritus (315-250 BC). The only worthy witnesses of Crotone's history are the ruins of the temple of Hera Lacinia, at Cape Colonna, and the collections of the Archaeological Museum. The Greek acropolis has completely disappeared under the imposing mass of the castle of Charles V. However, in Crotone you will find what you usually find in other big cities of Calabria: a nice commercial dynamism and an incessant animation. The lungomare is home to a large number of pubs and cafes, which are very pleasant on summer evenings. The historical center still preserves some beautiful palaces, such as the palazzo Morelli (late 19th century) and the palazzo Barraco, from the 18th century, which hosted Cardinal Ruffo and King Ferdinand IV. The castle is one of the most important and massive defensive works of southern Italy. The gardens of Villa Comunale are rich in shady alleys leading to the belvedere. Finally, explore the surroundings of Crotone which, like Capo Colonna, preserve some unique ancient remains.
