Le Castella is a small seaside resort with red sandy beaches and clear waters. The Aragonese castle stands on an islet connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. It was repeatedly attacked by the corsairs that infested the Calabrian coasts in the 16th century: in 1536 it was sacked by the Algerian pirate Barbarossa; in 1544 and in 1548 it was attacked by the corsair Dragut. Finally, Uccialli was born in Castella and was commander of the imperial fleet of Constantinople. He took part in the battle of Lepanto in 1571 (he escaped at the head of about thirty ships).
