Located in the fertile valley of the river Zeta, this small, recent town of some 5,000 inhabitants owes its origin to the will of Petar II Petrovic Njegoš to create a new capital to replace Cetinje. After Njegoš's untimely death, Prince Danilo continued the project and built a new bazaar on the banks of the Zeta. Gradually, a city took shape and after Danilo's assassination in 1861, Prince Nicholas I, who succeeded him, took over. He had a sophisticated city plan drawn up. Unfortunately, the turbulence of the time put an end to the project and Danilovgrad never became the much dreamed of capital.
