PARC NATIONAL URHO KEKKONEN
Go there and contact
With its 2,550 km² of unspoilt nature, Urho Kekkonen National Park is Finland's second largest park. It's also one of Europe's last great wildernesses, just a stone's throw from Russia. Here, taiga, tundra, rounded hills and boreal forests stretch as far as the eye can see, offering a raw, striking backdrop typical of eastern Lapland.
The park is so vast that a map is essential, especially for hikers who want to venture off the beaten track. For the less experienced, a number of marked loop trails, accessible from Saariselkä, offer day hikes of between 1 and 6 km. These itineraries are ideal for a first immersion in the silence and beauty of the North.
The more adventurous can embark on a 40 km trek along the Nuorti River, a true expedition through the most remote areas of the park. Open huts(autiotupa) line the long-distance routes, offering hikers the chance to experience total autonomy, at nature's pace. In winter, cross-country skis and snowshoes replace hiking boots, in a setting frozen in snow and bathed in boreal light.
An ideal place to reconnect with the essential. The vast, untamed landscapes, illuminated by the dancing lights overhead, offer photographers spectacular shots. Enjoy!
