The municipality of 6,385 inhabitants (2016) north of the Arctic Circle covers 8,391 km², including 167 km² of lakes and rivers. It's the gateway to the famous winter sports resort of Levi, just fifteen kilometers to the north. According to legend, Kittilä takes its name from Kitti, daughter of the powerful sorcerer Päiviö. It was once the largest Saami marketplace. Today, the summer fair (early July) attracts people from all over Lapland. There are no other major attractions, but there's plenty to do the shopping, get out and about, and enjoy the pleasures of a small town before heading back out into the wilderness.
