Lost in the middle of the Lapland countryside, the small town of Kaukonen, not far from the Ounasjoki River, has little to offer other than an interesting museum. Dedicated to the Finnish painter Reidar Särestöniemi (1925-1981), it features some five hundred works, including pastels, watercolors, oil paintings, drawings and woodcuts. Displays change every six months according to theme. The artist, who studied in Helsinki, returned to live and paint on his native farm all his life, drawing his inspiration from Lappish landscapes and nature.
