Vuotso, home to the Sompio nature park north of Sodankylä, is the gateway to the village of Tankavaara, off the E75-4. In this former gold-mining region, tourists flock to play gold digger. Every first weekend in August, the gold panning championships are even open to amateurs. Both towns lie on the mythical Route 4, and Vuotso is also the southernmost Saami town. Heading north, it is the gateway to the Far North, which is foreshadowed by Urho Kekkonen Park. It can be reached by car, bus or train (the nearest stations are in Rovaniemi and Kolari)
