Founded in 1779 on an isthmus between two lakes (Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi). With 225,118 inhabitants in 2016, Tampere is Finland's third-largest city after Helsinki and Espoo. The red-brick factories with their tall chimneys set in the heart of the city, the Tammerkoski rapids and their banks, form an original architectural ensemble that contrasts with the usual urban canons. The city's industrial development has not detracted from its superb environment and the obvious charm of the 200 lakes surrounding it. A university town with a dynamic economic and cultural scene, Tampere also hosts a wide range of sporting events.
