Kristiinankaupunki, population 6,463 in 2020, is an exquisite town - with a clear Swedish-speaking majority. Founded in 1649 by Peter Brahe, Kristinestad had to wait until the 19th century to become a major shipyard. Here as elsewhere, however, the arrival of steamers sounded the death knell of its glorious sailing prosperity. Today, this charming little town, miraculously untouched by fire, is well worth a visit. With its streets lined with colorful old wooden houses, it's sure to hold your interest. If the sun is shining, this short detour becomes even more special.
