With 83,000 inhabitants, Pori is one of Finland's oldest towns. A trading post at the mouth of the Kokemäenjoki River already existed in Viking times. In 1550, the town ignored a royal order from Vasa I, King of Sweden, to move its inhabitants to Helsinki. Still very active today, Pori is a dynamic industrial hub, with 45% of the working population engaged in the secondary sector. Pori is also home to a number of interesting sites. The town hall, built to Engel's design in the style of a Venetian palace, is topped by a tower. Admirable view of the city and river. A port and commercial city, Pori also owes its cultural reputation to its annual international jazz festival, held in mid-July. This musical event, one of the biggest in Europe, is held in the open-air theater on the island of Kirjurinluoto, in the middle of the river.
