Fajardo was founded in 1772 and was formerly known as Santiago de Fajardo. With its 30,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the east of the island. Although the town is important from a tourist point of view, its center offers very little to see and do; however, it is extremely well located, allowing easy access to several sights of the region: the bioluminescent bay of Laguna Grande, the nature reserves, not to mention the fact that Fajardo, or to be more precise, the port of Ceiba (15 km to the south), is the starting point for all those who wish to go to Vieques and Culebra by sea
