Founded in 1905, the town of Livingstone was named after the famous British missionary explorer David Livingstone, who revealed the existence of the Mosi-oa-Thunya Falls to the Western world and renamed them Victoria Falls. It became the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911 and was endowed with facilities far superior to those of the rest of the country, as the colonial buildings lining the main street still testify. Livingstone was also the first city to have a newspaper. In 1935, it was supplanted by Lusaka, which became the capital of Zambia. Livingstone, once a bustling city, is now a quiet little town, where colonial charm blends with African influences. On the other hand, its location, near the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls, has earned it the status of a tourist capital. Taking advantage of the unstable economic and political situation of its Zimbabwean neighbor with whom it shares the famous falls, Livingstone welcomes an increasing number of visitors and its infrastructure is constantly developing. From exceptional lodges to friendly backpackers, from cruises on the Zambezi River to rafting, bungee jumping... its charm operates as much on the amateurs of grandiose landscapes as on the adrenaline enthusiasts. In addition, the small Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park is the only chance to see white rhinos in Zambia.
