6 km upstream from the falls begins the Zambezi National Park, divided between forest and savannah. Bordering the river for 40 km, this 56,000 ha protected area attracts a multitude of wildlife and is a pleasant place for safari. The park is well developed and has easily accessible trails along the river, as well as numerous picnic sites offering beautiful views of the Zambezi islands. Most famous for its herds of black hippo, the park is also home to elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, baboon, thrush, kudu, impala, cob and some cat.
