The history of Saint-Maurice (population 4,500) began before the Christian era. Originally Celtic and known as Acauno, it was the chief town of the Nantuates tribe. Its strategic position, at the entrance to the Rhône valley and on the edge of several valleys, attracted the Romans, who established a military garrison and customs post here during the conquest of Gaul. It was also a commercial crossing point for goods transiting from Italy to Gaul. Maurice was a Theban legion leader who suffered martyrdom along with his soldiers at the end of the 3rd century. This is how Acauno came to be known as Saint-Maurice d'Agaune. A historical stopover can be combined with a visit to the Grotte aux Fées.
