The federal capital since 1848, Bern is only the fifth-largest city in terms of population, with around 145,000 inhabitants living within its walls. The canton itself has a population of 1,051,437. The Old Town is an architectural jewel, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Berne is often referred to as a country town because of the natural environment that still prevails in the surrounding area. With its 6 km of arcades and one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe, Berne is a city where strolling is a pure pleasure. Here, you'll find a sumptuous blend of medieval architecture (such as the Clock Tower and the Town Hall) and architecture open to the most modern trends, such as the Zentrum Paul Klee building. To its historic towers and its eleven incomparable fountains, which decorate the main streets and tell the story of Berne, is added the seat of the Swiss government, the latest proof of this city's astonishing dynamism and openness. This is an inspiring city: Einstein developed his theory of relativity here, and Tobler makes Toblerone chocolate here. Its surprising and bewitching architecture has also made it the center of numerous German and Swiss noir novels and thrillers. It's even possible to go on a "Bern kriminell" tour of the city. Shopaholics are in for a treat: they can stroll through miles of arcades in one of the world's most beautiful shopping malls.
