To the west, Biel/Bienne, with its 56,000 inhabitants, is Switzerland's bilingual city par excellence. Its number-one asset is, of course, its lake and water sports, but the city itself and the surrounding villages are not lacking in attractions. This is Switzerland's leading region for fruit and vegetable production. Here, on the lake, you'll find Île Saint-Pierre, where Rousseau lived for a time. Most of the old town is concentrated around the Ring, which is not, as in Vienna, a large boulevard but a pretty square and the historic heart of the city. To get there, it's a good ten-minute walk from the station.
