The small medieval town of Murten has 8,200 inhabitants. Situated on the south-eastern shore of the lake of the same name and on the German-French border, it has preserved its authenticity with its old town alleys and arcades. Founded in the 12th century by the Dukes of Zähringen, the town has become a very popular destination. Its ramparts, which are in excellent condition, surround the town centre and their walkway offers a beautiful panorama of the town's roofs and the lake. The lake offers swimming and a multitude of water sports activities. Don't miss: the Murten Museum, whose collection bears witness to 6000 years of history of the region
