Spared from the war, Świdnica has a perfectly preserved medieval center. The town is small, but very authentic and quiet. Until the Thirty Years' War, it was the most prosperous city in Silesia after Breslau. Freed from the Bohemian domination, it ruled over an independent duchy, dominated by ruthless lords, the Bolko. In the 14th century it was one of the largest cities in this part of Europe. Remained in the old times, out of the industrial development, it offers to the visitor a very interesting stage, still little known and thus far from the usual tourist crowds in the region.
