After Wrocław, Wałbrzych is the largest city in Silesia, with nearly 150,000 inhabitants. At the foot of the Sudeten Mountains, it is the center of a blackened and polluted mining region, and it still has a working cockery today. It is not entirely without interest, with a few Baroque houses on its Rynek and museums; but it will mostly serve as a stopover for visiting the gigantic Książ Castle on its outskirts. It is almost devoid of tourist infrastructure, and the smog and acid rain from the factories there spreads to the idyllic natural parks throughout the region
