The small village of Balestrand is one of Norway's tourist hotspots. The site is grandiose, with many houses built in the dragon style. In the wake of the preindependence nationalist wave at the end of the last century, attempts were made to create an architectural style unique to Norway. These wooden houses were inspired by standing wooden churches, but also by the Stabbur, small constructions on stilts that were widespread in the countryside. Painted oxblood red, they are easily recognized by their openwork wooden verandas and the dragon heads carved on the roofs.
