Borgund is a mountain village (its highest point is 1,920 m above sea level). High mountains surround the main valley, and nature is omnipresent, offering a wide range of hiking options. The village is best known for its wooden church, the Borgund stavkyrkje, built around 1200 and today considered one of the best preserved in Norway. The town's name comes from the Old Norse Borgyndr, Borg meaning city or fortress. If you're travelling from Bergen to Oslo, this could be a good option, as the town is also on the E16 motorway linking these two major metropolises.
