In Leikanger, former stronghold of a famous Viking chieftain, you can see Norway's largest menhir. Standing 8 m high, it is dedicated to the pagan god Balder. In January 2020, Leikanger joined forces with Balestrand and Sogndal to form the municipality of Sogndal. To reach Leikanger, take the ferry from Dragsvik and cross the fjord to Hella. From Hella, there's also a ferry to Vangsnes. This ferry takes you past Veganeset Point, a former torture ground for witches and other reprobates in the Middle Ages, where their severed and impaled heads were displayed as a warning. Frequent crossings.
