Founded in 1879, the commune of Ouégoa (Wégoa, in Kanak) is located in the heart of an ancient and vast mining region, previously focused on copper, manganese and zinc. Active between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the sites closed one after the other (Pilou, Balade and Fern Hill). Although its Melanesian identity is still strong, this municipality of 2,360 inhabitants is mixed and has many inhabitants of European origin. It thus constituted the bridgehead of French colonization in the South Pacific. In the shade of the mountains and on the banks of the only river of the Caillou, the Diahot, nature is of great beauty. This is particularly evident when you walk across the transverse and up the coast.
