During the Vietnam War, the city of Luang Namtha was destroyed by American bombing, as was the Plain of Jars. This small town is nestled in a basin planted with rice fields and surrounded by mountains. Because of its altitude, the climate is very pleasant during the day in the dry season (about 25°C), but nights can be cool. The interest of Luang Namtha lies mainly in its surrounding villages inhabited by ethnic minorities. UNESCO and the New Zealand government are actively contributing to the maintenance of the Nam Ha protected area, created in 1993. However, it is a peaceful town where it is pleasant to rest.
