From Menglun, you can continue to the town of Mengla, 200 km from Jinghong. This is a region that was banned until recently, but has since opened up to foreign travellers, who are now unhindered, proof of the openness of the region. Tourists go there to see the "Tree of Looking into the Sky" ("the Tree from which one can look in the Sky"). Mengla is one of the entrances to Laos. The roads are good, and the border is a modern one.
