Located about 50 km from Lomé, the city of Aného, the former colonial capital, is nestled on a small strip of sand between the Gulf of Benin and the lagoon periodically enlarged by the waters of the Mono, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, in the district of Apounoukpa. It has retained a colonial charm that is its main attraction, with its beautiful sandy beaches lined with coconut trees. Formerly Petit-Popo, the city developed thanks to trade with Westerners and the slave trade. Until 1897, Aného was the capital of the German "model colony" that was Togo. An administrative city was built beyond the lagoon, in the Zébé district. It is an ideal place to go on an excursion to Togoville or to visit the market of Vogan located at approximately 18 km from the city. The Mono valley, on the border with Benin, and the mangroves not far from Aného offer a very beautiful biodiversity. It is possible to go down the river by pirogue from the village of Avévé to reach Aného. The road follows the coastline and crosses an immense palm grove which, unfortunately, tends to disappear following the galloping expansion of Lomé. There are a few small maquis in the center of Aného where you can eat for not too much money. Most hotels offer fish dishes, a specialty of the region.
