Welcome to the heart of the Nyigblin cult and voodoo, welcome to the heart of Togo! Togoville is a city rich in tradition and history. It is first of all at the heart of the mystical history of the country. Togoville comes from To-Go, interpreted as "the bank at the foot of the hill", in reference to its location in relation to the sacred forest of Tatsiveglo (opposite Togoville) where the "voodoo priests" once buried the fetishes before crossing the lake and settling on the site of the present city. Today, Togoville is still imbued with mysticism as evidenced by the numerous fetishes and the purification and thanksgiving ceremonies that take place there every year. Life there is still largely punctuated by traditional ceremonies that lead to numerous prohibitions during these periods. It is not uncommon to hear or see women going into a trance to communicate with the spirits, or to come across future "voodoo priests" in ceremonial dress in an alley. Togoville is also a sacred place for Christians since the apparition of the Virgin Mary on the lake in 1973. A cathedral in honor of the martyred saints of Uganda was built in 1910. Located on the shores of Lake Togo, the city offers an authentic and relaxing setting. The square to the left of the pier built for the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1985 offers a beautiful view of the lake and an ideal place to relax.
