The town lies at the tip of the 12 km-long Traunsee lake, the pearl of this small town, gateway to the Salzkammergut lake region and tourist route between Linz and Salzburg. Gmunden owes its prosperity to the salt trade, which dates back to Roman times. The Seeschloss, a small castle in the middle of the water accessible via a dike, exudes charm, as do the swans on the lake. Processions on the water, local cultural life, the nearby Traunfall waterfall and hiking trails on the Traunstein all combine to make this former imperial resort an ideal base for a pleasant stay.
