population of approximately 4,069. Terchová is a village in the Žilina district, known as the tourist centre of the Little Fatras. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1580, when the inhabitants worked in quarries and forests or lived from sheep farming. In the 19th century, faced with these difficult conditions, a large part of the population emigrated to Canada, the United States, France or Argentina. This small mountain village is the birthplace of Juraj Jánošík, the Slovak Robin Hood who lived in the 18th century. It is also the entry point to the Malá Fatra massif, its hiking and ski resorts.
