The first mention of this town of about 3,000 inhabitants dates from 1068. Cosmas of Prague, a writer and cleric, mentions the original castle in his Chronica Boemorum (Bohemian Chronicle). The present castle is one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Bohemia. It is the main reason for visiting this small village, which is less than 30 km away from Hradec Kralové. Buses run every hour or so and take only 35-40 minutes to get there. There is also a direct bus from Prague Florenc (at least 2 hours drive).
