The city was rebuilt on the ruins of the old Roman centre Helvia Recina. Its structure is typical: a square around which are organized the noble palace, the cathedral, the porticos... Then, following a system of concentric circles, come the shops of the craftsmen, the houses of the workers and, immediately after, the walls, the village inhabited by the agricultural workers. It regularly experiences tremors (most recently in March 2020 with a magnitude of 3.3).
