Tolentino is located in the centre of the Chienti valley, 20 km from Macerata. The town of Tolentino remains famous for the agreements signed on 19 February 1797 between Napoleon Bonaparte and the Papal States of Pope Pius VI: the clauses provided for heavy losses for the Papacy and at the same time consecrated Bonaparte's rise to power. The Papal States had to give away about a hundred works of art, some of which were destined for the Louvre Museum. For example, the Tiber Statue with Romulus and Remus has been on display in the Louvre since this Napoleonic seizure. In 2016, the city was not spared by the earthquake
