Located east of Ovalau, the historic port town of Levuka has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2013. Levuka offers a unique journey back in time. It was the first capital of Fiji (from 1874 to 1883) at the time of British colonization, but was later replaced by Suva, as Levuka's landlocked position hampered its economic development. Levuka is a rare example of a port town where the indigenous community outnumbered the European settlers. The town's development was strongly influenced by local traditions, resulting in a unique cultural hybridity still visible today.
