Since an 1882 decree, Suva has been the capital of Fiji, a role it stole from its island neighbor Levuka (Ovalau). Suva is also the largest city of all the South Pacific nations. Although it hasn't always been the capital, Suva has always been rainy, cloudy and grey, hence its nickname of " Rainy City ". Suva's architecture bears the imprint of the British invasion it suffered nearly 150 years ago. This is evidenced by the many colonial-style buildings, such as the Suva City Library and Government House. Far from essential to a short stay in Fiji, the city is nevertheless a good base from which to explore the surrounding attractions. A visit to Suva can be done in a day, but for those who wish to stay longer, it can be a relaxed and calm stop-off off the beaten tourist track.
